England Coach Contract Extended With Performance Clause
The national team coach's two-year extension runs through Euro 2028 and includes performance clauses. Officials said the extension was agreed earlier this year to avoid uncertainty during the current World Cup.
The BbcEngland's national team coach signed a two-year contract extension earlier this year that runs through Euro 2028 and contains performance clauses. The original deal was set to expire after the World Cup. Officials said the extension was arranged to secure the coach ahead of the home tournament and to prevent uncertainty from affecting preparations.
The chief executive stated that performance clauses exist in every contract at the organization but declined to provide details. The same official said the organization can hold the coach to the contract and that no break clause allows the coach to exit early.
The coach was appointed in 2024 with the stated goal of winning the World Cup. The extension covers the period after that tournament and includes the 2028 home event.
The coach's team opens its World Cup campaign on Wednesday against Croatia in Arlington, Texas. Officials said the extension was completed before the tournament to ensure stability and to retain a manager viewed as performing well. The chief executive noted that any manager on a fixed-term deal would consider future options as the contract neared its end.
Officials said leaving the matter unresolved would have created an unwanted distraction during the current competition.
Hydration breaks have been permitted during matches in the United States because of heat and humidity. The chief executive said the breaks are important for player welfare, particularly for European teams, but added that similar breaks are unlikely at Euro 2028.
