redpepper.org.ukEngland defeated New Zealand by 115 runs on the fourth day of the first Rothesay Test at Lord's. The visitors were dismissed for 138 while chasing 254 after beginning the day at 55-5. Josh Tongue dismissed Tom Blundell with the seventh delivery of the morning.
Glenn Phillips and Devon Conway then added 53 for the seventh wicket before Harry Brook dropped Conway at second slip. Ben Stokes induced a miscue from Conway, after which Gus Atkinson dismissed Nathan Smith, Kyle Jamieson and Matt Henry to finish with 5-30. England had scored 140 in their first innings, with Harry Brook making 56 and Kyle Jamieson taking 5-62.
New Zealand replied with 113, Kyle Jamieson unbeaten on 38 and Ollie Robinson claiming 5-39. In their second innings England reached 226, Emilio Gay scoring 57 on debut and Nathan Smith taking 6-70. The third day was almost entirely lost to rain.
The match was completed in 167 overs with no spin deliveries bowled by either side, the first such occurrence in a Test in this country since 1988. England lead the three-match series 1-0.
The second Test begins at The Oval on 17 June. England had not played a Test since their 4-1 series defeat in Australia.
