Fifpro guidelines state that WBGT above 28C should lead to delay or postponement of matches. The stadium roof reduces airflow and traps humidity. England's previous matches occurred indoors in Dallas and Atlanta at 21C or outdoors in Boston, New Jersey, and Mexico City in cooler, damper conditions.

Their warmest prior game reached 25C against Panama under overcast skies. Norway played all but one match outdoors, including a 2-1 victory over Brazil in New Jersey under an extreme heat warning and an opener against Iraq at 25C under clear skies. England spent 10 days in Florida upon arrival, playing warm-up matches against New Zealand in Tampa and Costa Rica in Orlando, before basing in Kansas where daily air temperatures reach 32-34C.

Norway based in Greensboro, North Carolina, and played warm-up matches against Sweden in Oslo and Morocco in New Jersey. Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue received 38 heat-related calls at Hard Rock Stadium after the first three fixtures, with five requiring hospital treatment. The City of Miami reported 79 heat-related calls at Fan Fest on 23 June.

Uruguay's group-stage matches in Miami reached WBGT levels of 32.9C and 33C. The hottest World Cup game on record was Republic of Ireland versus Mexico in Orlando in 1994 at 43.33C.
