England and France to Play Third-Place Match Sunday

England and France will face each other in the World Cup third-place playoff on Sunday morning AEST. Both teams lost in the semifinals and will not play in Monday's final between Argentina and Spain.

France defender Ibrahima Konate said none of the players wanted to play in the third-place game but added that they have no choice. England coach Thomas Tuchel said the four semifinal teams all wanted to be in New York for the final but described the upcoming match as an official World Cup game.

Mbappe has eight goals in the tournament, tied with Lionel Messi for the lead. Messi holds the tiebreaker with four assists to Mbappe's three. France coach Didier Deschamps said Mbappe is available after participating in training but that lineup changes are planned.

Tuchel also said England will make changes. Deschamps said the match is his final game after 14 years as France coach. Konate said the players want to give him one last win. Tuchel said England still needs to close the gap with France, Argentina and Spain after reaching the semifinals for the first time since 2018.
