England to Offer Free MenB Vaccine to New University Students Starting July 20
The Independent reported that thousands of students entering university in autumn 2026 will receive free meningococcal group B vaccinations at participating pharmacies across England. England will begin offering free MenB vaccinations to eligible new university students on July 20 at participating pharmacies. The Independent reported that the program targets students starting university for the first time in autumn 2026 who were born on or after July 21, 2001, including many who will be 17 years old when the effort starts.
The rollout follows an outbreak of meningococcal group B in Kent earlier in 2026 that was linked to two deaths.
University students face elevated risk during their first year because of close living quarters and frequent social contact that can spread the bacteria through kissing, sharing drinks or vapes, and prolonged proximity. The MenB vaccine protects against group B bacteria that cause meningitis and septicaemia.
The NHS schedule calls for two doses at least 28 days apart, though one dose may offer partial protection.
Students who received the vaccine through the infant program introduced in 2015 are not the primary focus of this catch-up effort. The vaccine does not cover meningococcal groups A, C, W or Y, which are addressed by the separate MenACWY vaccine already offered to teenagers and university entrants.
No vaccine protects against every form of meningitis, and recipients are advised to remain alert for symptoms such as fever, stiff neck, severe headache and rash even after vaccination.
Students can book appointments or visit walk-in centres and may need to show proof of university acceptance, such as a UCAS offer or university email. The Independent reported that the program aims to reduce transmission in the higher-risk student population.
