England Sets New June Average Temperature Record of 17.1C

England recorded its warmest June on record last month with an average temperature of 17.1 °C, the Met Office said. The figure exceeded the previous record of 16.9 °C set in June 2025. The exceptional warmth stemmed from an intense heatwave that brought temperatures above 30 °C across parts of the UK for seven consecutive days from 21 to 27 June.

A provisional peak of 37.7 °C was measured at Lingwood in Norfolk on 26 June, more than 2 °C above the prior June maximum of 35.6 °C. A new June record for the highest overnight minimum was also set when temperatures at Cardiff Bute Park fell no lower than 23.5 °C on 25 June. Rare extreme heat warnings were issued for several days during the month.

More than 1,000 schools and nurseries closed during the heatwave. Public transport services were disrupted when overhead wires and signalling systems were strained by the high temperatures. A yellow heat health alert was issued for large parts of the UK later this week.

The same heatwave affected France, Germany, Slovakia, Serbia, Croatia, Italy, Austria and western Ukraine, with more than 1,000 heat-linked deaths reported in France alone.
