English barrister fights extradition to Croatia over domestic abuse charges

The couple married in 2009, lived in both England and Croatia, and separated in December 2021. They divorced in 2024. Court records show disputes over property division, an alleged withdrawal of £85,000 from the barrister's account, and a claim by his former wife for £60,000 in maintenance payments.
Criminal proceedings Croatian prosecutors charged the barrister with several counts of domestic abuse. He denies the allegations and told a High Court judge last week that his former wife cleared his bank account on the same day she reported the incident to police.
He stated he was arrested in Croatia, held for several days, and had his passport confiscated for seven months. A further extradition hearing is scheduled at Westminster Magistrates' Court.
Civil claims The barrister asked the High Court to order disclosure of his former wife's full bank statements, arguing they would show she used the withdrawn funds for family expenses rather than personal use. Mr Justice Morris refused the application and stayed the money claim pending the outcome of family court proceedings later this year.
The former wife, appearing by video link, denied taking the money without permission and accused the barrister of coercive and controlling behavior. She told the court she had no access to joint accounts and relied on rental income during the marriage.
