Los Angeles TimesErewhon opened its newest store in Glendale on Wednesday at 520 N. Glendale Avenue. The location marks the luxury grocer's 14th store in Southern California. The store includes the chain's signature cafe and tonic bar along with an indoor-outdoor patio space. Employees handed out complimentary gift bags and fresh flowers during the grand opening.
Erewhon was founded in 1966 by Michio and Aveline Kushi, who began selling imported organic goods from their Boston home. Josephine and Tony Antoci purchased the company in 2011. Josephine Antoci serves as president and selects much of the merchandise while Tony Antoci is chief executive.
The company has locations in Beverly Hills, Calabasas, Venice, Manhattan Beach, and The Grove. A Thousand Oaks location is scheduled to open in August. Additional stores in Costa Mesa and downtown Los Angeles are planned for 2027.
The Glendale location replaced Virgil's Hardware Home Center, which operated from 1932 until 2019. The company purchased the former hardware store space in 2024. Glendale Mayor Ardashes Kassakhian said the decision reflects confidence in the city's economic future. The Pacific Palisades location, closed after wildfires last year, is set to reopen in January.
