The ranking includes players who led the league in assists multiple times and those who improved their passing over their careers. Several players on the list averaged between 4.0 and 9.2 assists per game in various seasons.

Career assist totals One player on the list finished with 2,345 career assists and led the league in assists three times. Another player recorded 2,394 career assists over 20 seasons while also making a league-record 1,447 three-pointers. A third player reached 1,875 career assists and posted a league-best 9.2 assists per game in one season.

The same player averaged 8.0 assists per game during the current season.

League pioneers A player who joined the league at age 31 recorded a career average of 5.3 assists per game over eight seasons. She led the league in assists during its first season and averaged 6.2 assists per game over her first six years. Another player on the list posted a career average of 4.0 assists per game, including a league-best 6.3 assists per game in one season.

She averaged 16.0 points and 8.5 rebounds over 16 seasons.
