ESPN’s College GameDay will open its 40th season this year with its 500th road show on Sept. 5 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The broadcast will take place before LSU hosts Clemson in a game that marks Lane Kiffin’s debut with the Tigers.

The announcement was made during the network’s upfront presentation to advertisers on Tuesday. The first College GameDay broadcast from a campus occurred on Nov. 13, 1993, in South Bend, Indiana, ahead of a matchup between No.

2 Notre Dame and top-ranked Florida State. Since then the show has visited 82 schools across 39 states. It also kicked off the 2024 season in Ireland for a game between Florida State and Georgia Tech.

The Sept. 5 show will mark the program’s 15th visit to LSU. ESPN also announced that the Sept. 12 broadcast will originate from Austin, Texas, before Ohio State and Texas play for the third consecutive season.

The season-opening show in 2024 was in Columbus, Ohio, for Ohio State’s 14-7 victory over Texas.

“Opening ‘College GameDay’s’ 40th season with our 500th show on the road is one of the moments that helps to put the history of ‘College GameDay’ into perspective. The show has evolved over four decades, but our reason for going on the road hasn’t changed - to share with fans across the country the unparalleled passion and incredible atmospheres that make college football unlike anything else. And to start this season with two marquee matchups, we’ll be able to set the tone for another unforgettable fall.”

Matt Garrett, ESPN’s vice president of production (The Washington Times)

The program has become a longstanding feature of college football coverage, originating from game sites to capture the atmosphere on campuses. Its road shows have taken it to locations across the United States and once to Ireland. The upcoming season will continue that approach with prominent early-season matchups.
