Europe Endures Record Early Summer Heatwave With 100-Degree Readings

Parts of Europe are experiencing a record-breaking early summer heatwave as of June 24, 2026. France recorded its hottest night since measurements began in 1947 on the evening of June 23, followed by the hottest afternoon ever at 37.8 °C (100 °F). A powerful high-pressure heat dome has spread across the continent, trapping superheated Saharan air from the Iberian Peninsula to major Western European capitals.

Several regions are expected to break all-time heat records that normally occur in July. "France has just experienced its hottest night since measurements began in 1947," said Jason Nicholls, international meteorologist with AccuWeather. " The extreme heat prompted residents to enter cooler waters, resulting in 40 drownings in France in the past few days, the prime minister said on June 23.

In Paris, residents faced sleepless nights in apartments ill-equipped for heat. Europe is warming at more than twice the global average, according to the World Meteorological Organization, which increases the likelihood of such prolonged heat episodes. Only about 20 percent of European households have air conditioning, compared with nearly 90 percent of American homes.

The heat stems from an upper low that developed over the Azores late last week and has since moved closer to Spain and France. A blocking pattern over central Asia is extending the duration of the event. "The heat should ease from northwest to southeast across Europe starting this weekend," Nicholls said.

London will endure intense heat through June 26, with conditions easing over the weekend. Paris will remain hot through June 27, with thunderstorms on June 28 and cooler air arriving by June 29. Across Germany the heat will strengthen and persist through the weekend before moderating on June 29.

Peak heat in Central Europe is expected from the weekend into June 29, followed by a gradual cooldown between June 30 and July 1.
