European Union to Cap Tariff-Free Steel Imports Starting Wednesday

The European Union will limit the amount of tariff-free steel its member states can import from Wednesday, as part of efforts to protect the bloc’s steel industry from overcapacity. The restriction applies to steel entering the 27-nation bloc without paying tariffs. Officials said the change responds to excess global production that has pressured domestic mills.

Member states will still be able to import steel above the new limits, but those shipments will face standard tariffs. The policy takes effect immediately and has no announced end date.
