The evacuation order covers portions of Garden Grove, Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park and Westminster.
Shelters and nearby hotels reached capacity as residents sought temporary housing.
Tricia Quach, 38, of Cypress said her children asked questions after the family left for an evacuation shelter at the Cypress Community Center. She and her husband and two children are staying with a family friend. Helen Fernandez, 40, of Buena Park said she and her family were deciding where to stay after receiving the evacuation notice.
Bar manager Miguel Loo, 30, reported leaving Irvine after receiving the alert and experiencing dizziness and headache while packing. Yoshi Nakashini, 79, said he, his girlfriend and her son spent the night at a hotel near Disneyland with their two cats at a cost of about $380 including parking.
, 64, of Cypress arrived at the Kennedy High School shelter after the evacuation zone expanded and compared the uncertainty to a military deployment.
