An explosion in a cafe in central Damascus killed five people and injured at least 10 on Thursday, Syrian authorities said. Syrian state television reported that the blast was caused by an explosive device planted in the location. The cafe sits near the Palace of Justice in the capital.
The head of emergency services in Syria's health ministry, Ahmed al-Bakour, gave the casualty toll in statements carried by the state news agency SANA. State television earlier reported 11 injuries while one social media account listed 16. Security forces cordoned off the area after the blast.
An ambulance was seen transporting victims from the scene.
