A fire and explosion at a Staten Island shipyard Friday afternoon injured at least 16 people, including three with serious injuries. Firefighters and emergency crews responded to the site on Richmond Terrace after reports of workers trapped in a confined space.

Emergency workers had counted 16 people injured at the site. The injuries included one civilian and two firefighters with serious injuries, two firefighters with moderate injuries, and nine firefighters plus two EMS workers with minor injuries. More than 200 firefighters and emergency medical personnel from 68 units remained on scene into the evening.
Hazmat teams, the Department of Buildings and the Department of Environmental Protection were also notified. The fire was later brought under control.
U.S. Navy during World War II. The surrounding area includes a coffee roasting company and a self-storage facility. New York Attorney General Letitia James posted on X that she was “praying for the @FDNY firefighters and everyone injured after the explosion in Staten Island today” and thanked the department for its “swift response.
