An explosion and fire struck the Barzan local gas supply facility inside Ras Laffan Industrial City on Sunday evening, injuring 54 people and leaving 18 others unaccounted for as of early Monday. The incident occurred during the start-up of operations at the industrial city, QatarEnergy stated. The state firm described the event as an operational incident caused by a technical malfunction.
Emergency response teams were deployed and brought the fire under control. Qatar’s Interior Ministry confirmed that civil defense teams responded and reported no leak after the blast. A loud explosion was heard in Doha, roughly 80 kilometers south of the site, the ministry said.
Ras Laffan lies in northern Qatar and hosts one of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas production and export complexes. The same industrial area sustained damage during earlier regional conflict when a missile penetrated air defenses and struck the complex. Qatar later declared the military and security attachés at Iran’s embassy and their deputies persona non grata.
Tehran stated at the time that the target was energy infrastructure linked to the United States and that it had not intended to harm Gulf states.
