Extreme heat forced the cancellation of major Fourth of July parades and events across the eastern United States on July 4, 2026. Washington DC's Independence Day morning event and Philadelphia's Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade were both called off after organizers cited safety risks from record temperatures.
More than 165 million people along the East Coast and Midwest endured record heat on July 4, according to the US National Weather Service.
New York City reached 100°F on July 3, its hottest day since 2012. Philadelphia was forecast to hit 104°F with a heat index of 112°F, while Washington DC was expected to reach 103°F with a heat index of 111°F. The Great American State Fair on the National Mall closed for several hours on July 4 after the DC Fire and EMS Department treated multiple people for heat-related illnesses.
At least 11 people were taken by ambulance from the site. The fair reopened at 17:00 local time. US Capitol Police delayed public entry to the A Capitol Fourth concert from 15:00 to 19:00. Michael DelBene, CEO of Wawa Welcome America, said the Philadelphia parade could not proceed under the dangerous conditions.
Freedom 250, the fair organizer, stated that guest safety was its highest priority. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the conditions as extremely dangerous. President Donald Trump is scheduled to speak at an outdoor celebration on the National Mall on July 5.
He said he planned a long speech to demonstrate his endurance in the heat. Fireworks displays are planned in multiple cities.
