F-16 Jets Intercept Three Aircraft That Entered Restricted Airspace Over New Jersey During World Cup Final

North American Aerospace Defense Command F-16s intercepted three general aviation aircraft that entered temporary flight restrictions over Bedminster and East Rutherford on Sunday during the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium. More than 10 such planes entered the restricted airspace that day, prompting the action. Four F-16 jets also conducted a flyover at the stadium during the event.

NORAD aircraft dispensed flares during two of the intercepts to alert the pilots. All three intercepted aircraft were safely escorted out of the restricted area. The command advised any intercepted pilot to immediately switch to frequency 121.5 or 243.0, reverse course, and await further instructions.

It added that the flares burn out quickly and completely and pose no danger to people on the ground. NORAD urged pilots to review Notice to Airmen and FAA Temporary Flight Restrictions before flying in the area.
