An F-16 fighter jet intercepted a civilian plane that entered restricted airspace over Hagerstown, Maryland, on Saturday afternoon, military officials said. The aircraft had violated a VIP Temporary Flight Restriction, the North American Aerospace Defense Command said. The F-16 intercepted the plane at approximately 12:20 p.m.
ET and monitored it until the aircraft landed safely at a nearby airport, NORAD said. The restriction functions as a no-fly zone often established for movements of President Trump, Vice President JD Vance or other high-ranking U.S. government officials, according to the National Business Aviation Association.
Temporary flight restrictions are issued through Notices to Airmen and prohibit aircraft and drones from operating in designated airspace without permission, the FAA says. Violations can result in warnings, fines, certificate suspensions or revocations, the agency said. Such intercepts are not uncommon.
And escorted it from the area, NORAD said. Earlier in June, the agency reported its jets responded to more than a dozen unauthorized aircraft incursions in the New York and New Jersey region since the beginning of the month.
