Facility Dogs Assist Victims and Families in Winnipeg Court System

Two facility dogs, Glossy and Bagel, support victims of crime and their families in Winnipeg's law courts. The dogs help reduce stress during court proceedings and interactions with victim services. The program, operated by Manitoba Justice Victim Services, began with the introduction of the first dog in 2016.

Background and Operations Manitoba introduced its first facility dog, Milan, in 2016.

Milan retired in 2021. The program supports victims during court processes, such as testimony or meetings with services. The dogs help individuals feel comfortable discussing difficult experiences.

The dogs primarily work with children testifying in court but also assist in other cases.

Dog and Court Integration The province added a second dog, Bagel, in response to increasing requests for assistance. A victim services executive director reported that court personnel, including judges, defence lawyers, prosecutors and clerks, have adapted to the presence of the dogs. The executive director stated that the court system now anticipates the dogs' involvement.

The dogs also conduct courthouse tours for families to familiarize them with the environment. At the end of the workday, Glossy returns home with her handler, where she interacts with the handler's pet dog. Bagel works specifically with victims' families. The program continues to expand to meet demand within the Manitoba justice system.
