Fake websites copy retailer pages to sell discounted air conditioners

Fraudulent websites that copy the design and branding of established retailers are advertising air conditioning units at large discounts during a period of high temperatures in the UK. The sites list products such as an energy-efficient air conditioner and heater set for £28.13, down from £64.44, and a 3-in-1 portable unit for £149.99 instead of £474.99.

Messages on the pages state that only a small number of units remain in stock and that the special price will end soon.

How the sites operate The copied pages use retailer logos, display real product images, show visitor counts, and set countdown timers. One example replicates the layout of a supermarket chain site and lists an air conditioning unit at roughly one-third of its typical price.

Advice from cybersecurity firm A representative of the cybersecurity company Kaspersky, which identified the sites, said pressure tactics such as warnings about low stock or expiring discounts can lead users to enter payment or personal data without full review.

The same representative advised users to verify website addresses, search for the retailer independently, and use security software if uncertain about a page. A spokesperson for the supermarket chain said the company works to identify and report fake sites and that genuine offers appear only on its official website and social media accounts.

If payment details have been shared, the article states that individuals should contact their bank, report the incident to fraud authorities, and change passwords.
