The Atlanta Falcons will not stage a quarterback competition between Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. until Penix can participate in all practice drills, quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt said Monday in Flowery Branch, Ga. Penix is recovering from left ACL surgery performed in November and has not yet been cleared for 11-on-11 team sessions.

He has been participating in 7-on-7s and individual drills. "It's tough to have a competition when both guys aren't competing at the same level right now," Van Pelt said. "Mike's done a great job of getting himself to where he is right now.

Really impressive to take 7-on-7 reps and go out and compete. " Van Pelt said Penix has been taking more 7-on-7 reps than Tagovailoa to make up for the difference in Penix's lack of 11-on-11 sessions. "We split the reps as evenly as we can without Mike taking team reps," Van Pelt said.

Stefanski was coy Monday about whether that clearance could occur next week during minicamp. The Falcons will hold their minicamp practices on June 16 and 17.
