Fans Stranded for Hours at MetLife Stadium After World Cup Match
Thousands of spectators faced delays leaving MetLife Stadium Saturday night after the Brazil versus Morocco game. Ride-share users remained on site past midnight while many trains ran below capacity. Bus service cleared passengers within three hours of the final whistle.
New York Postm. Saturday. Ride-share passengers could not exit the adjacent American Dream property until after midnight, while many trains arrived and departed with seats empty. A transportation planning source told the New York Post that high round-trip rail fares of $98 contributed to the low train ridership.
The same source said many fans chose to drive despite parking costs reaching $225.
Transit cleared all bus passengers from the site within three hours of the game ending. One shuttle bus traveling between New York City and the stadium caught fire during post-game celebrations after the New York Knicks' NBA championship win. The stadium had been temporarily renamed New York New Jersey Stadium for the matches.
Officials had encouraged rail travel, but the combination of elevated ticket prices and available parking led many visitors to drive instead.
