The event focused on collaborative efforts involving the Trump administration, Congress, local law enforcement, and area prosecutors over the past 13 months.
stated that his trip to Beijing, the first by an FBI director in over a decade, led to an agreement to shut off 13 precursors used by Mexican drug traffickers to produce fentanyl.
He attributed the agreement to President Trump's leadership and described it as a step to attack the issue at its source.
Patel noted that President Trump designated Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, providing law enforcement with additional tools similar to those used against groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS.
This designation targets cartels such as the Gulf Cartel and CJNG, according to Patel.
Patel reported that law enforcement has removed enough fentanyl from the streets in one year to potentially kill 178 million Americans.
He stated that these efforts have saved hundreds of thousands of lives over the past 13 to 14 months. Patel described the reception in China as receptive, leading to the agreement on precursors. He emphasized that the agreement between the United States and China to address drug trafficking represents a significant development.
The roundtable underscored continued actions against drug traffickers in Mexico.
Patel indicated that efforts will persist until the fentanyl problem is resolved.
