New York PostThe FBI operates a 22,000-square-foot indoor training facility in Huntsville, Alabama, called the Kinetic Cyber Range. The site contains realistic buildings including a grocery store, hotel, courthouse, gas station, fully furnished homes, a power company, a video games arcade, and a data center running 200 servers. Each space is wired with functioning systems, networks, and devices.
The facility opened last year. Since opening, it has trained more than 1,400 students, including FBI personnel and partners from other agencies. The FBI states the site prepares agents, analysts, and forensic specialists for investigations involving digital evidence.
On Wednesday the FBI stated: “The FBI’s Kinetic Cyber Range in Huntsville, Alabama, resembles a small town with everything a small town has. ” In April a training exercise involved students responding to a simulated ransomware attack that locked down a hospital network. Students also practiced extracting a car’s electronic control unit.
Dave Beachboard, who manages the FBI’s Kinetic Cyber Range, stated: “This is about as real as it’s going to get before people go out in the field. We try to keep the scenarios as real as possible. ” The grocery store inside the facility includes a deli counter and refrigerated beverages.
