The Food and Drug Administration upgraded a voluntary recall of certain Dirty and Zapp’s brand potato chips to its highest classification. The action covers more than 650,000 bags after possible salmonella contamination linked to dry milk powder used in seasoning.
Los Angeles TimesThe Food and Drug Administration has raised its recall of selected Utz potato chip products to Class 1 status, the agency’s most serious designation. The classification signals a reasonable probability that exposure to the affected items could cause serious health consequences or death. The move applies to three flavors each of Dirty and Zapp’s chips.
More than 650,000 bags are included.
Affected products carry specific UPC codes and best-by dates ranging from late July through late August. The company initiated the voluntary recall in May after learning the dry milk powder used for seasoning came from a supplier whose ingredient tested positive for salmonella risk. The powder itself had tested negative before use, the company stated at the time.
In a May 5 press release the company said it had not detected salmonella in finished products and had received no illness reports. It described the recall as a precaution. Consumers who purchased any of the listed items are advised not to eat them and to discard the packages.
Most cases resolve without treatment, though severe dehydration or spread beyond the intestines can require hospitalization. The FDA’s weekly enforcement report issued Friday did not detail the specific evidence that prompted the Class 1 upgrade.
