U.S. Food and Drug Administration alert. The recalled items are sold in 2-pound or 5-pound clear plastic tubes sealed with metal clips and in frozen cardboard boxes containing five to 20 tubes. White stick-on labels list flavor, ingredients, and date codes.

The products were distributed to customers in Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

The FDA alert states that some samples collected by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture tested positive for the bacteria while others tested negative. Not all food was tested. Infected humans may experience vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, fever, and lethargy; severe cases can lead to meningitis, abortion, or death.

Pets exposed to contaminated food can carry Listeria monocytogenes without showing symptoms and may transfer the bacteria through feces and saliva. The alert advises consumers to treat the recalled products as potentially contaminated and to discard them immediately in a secure manner.

All production of the dog food was temporarily stopped on May 21. The company stated the pause allows evaluation of current issues and implementation of corrective actions. Food can be ordered from the company website and picked up in person. Pet owners are advised against using, selling, or consuming the recalled products.

Newsweek reached out to Raaw Energy by phone on Monday and left a voice message but received no reply by publication time.
