FDA Issues Recall for Enoki Mushrooms Over Listeria Risk

U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a recall of two brands of enoki mushrooms sold in 150-gram bags after product samples tested positive for listeria monocytogenes. The recall covers mushrooms distributed through local wholesalers in Florida and Texas. Consumers who purchased the affected products are advised to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause serious illness after consumption of contaminated food. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women face higher risks.

Symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal issues. In severe cases, infection can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or life-threatening illness in newborns.

People in higher-risk groups who develop flu-like symptoms within two months of eating the recalled mushrooms should contact a medical provider, according to the CDC.
