Justice Department Finds Yale Medical School Used Race in Admissions

The Justice Department announced Thursday that its investigation determined Yale University’s medical school discriminated against white and Asian applicants in its admissions process. The conclusion, drawn from the school’s own internal records of applicant race and ethnicity, centered on disparities in interview offers and acceptance rates that investigators said could not be explained by academic metrics alone.

The probe examined quantitative factors including MCAT scores, undergraduate GPAs, and research experience, as well as qualitative elements such as letters of recommendation, personal statements, and interview performance. Federal officials stated that white and Asian applicants with comparable qualifications received fewer interview invitations and lower acceptance offers than peers from other racial groups.

The investigation relied on the medical school’s detailed tracking of applicant race and ethnicity across multiple admission cycles, which formed a central part of the evidence.

This marks the second such finding against a prominent medical school in eight days. The earlier action targeted another leading institution and followed broader federal reviews of higher education admissions practices after changes in legal standards. Both cases examined whether race was used as a negative factor against overrepresented groups.

Yale University’s medical school has not yet issued a public response to the specific findings. The institution previously described its holistic review process as compliant with all applicable laws and necessary for building a diverse physician workforce. The Justice Department’s announcement stops short of prescribing specific remedies.
