Federal judge blocks expanded Atlantic red snapper season
A federal judge in Washington halted a plan that would have allowed recreational anglers in four states to keep one red snapper per day for 39 to 62 days. The decision came days before the season was set to open on May 22.
The IndependentA federal judge in Washington blocked a plan to extend the recreational Atlantic red snapper season, stopping what officials said would have been the longest such season in years. The order came after the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued permits in May exempting Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina from some Magnuson-Stevens Act requirements.
The permits would have replaced winter bottom-fishing closures with a season of 39 to 62 days and a one-fish daily limit.
Court challenge and immediate effects Recreational anglers had booked trips for the May 22 opening. One fisherman learned of the ruling by text message while driving to the marina and described initial disbelief at the sudden change. Commercial fishermen and environmental groups had raised concerns that the expanded harvest could exceed sustainable limits.
One commercial fisherman said rising costs and imported seafood already threaten the viability of his operation.
Stock status and regulatory background NOAA estimates that roughly one-quarter of released red snapper die after being brought to the surface. Fishermen argue the stock has recovered enough to support longer seasons, while scientists note that many fish caught are still below peak reproductive age.
NOAA said it continues to work with state managers under an executive order signed last year by President Donald Trump aimed at streamlining fisheries operations. The agency declined further comment because of the ongoing litigation.
