Federal Judge Blocks Parts of Trump Mail-Ballot Order; Earlier Ruling Upheld Other Sections
U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani issued a preliminary injunction June 25 blocking Sections 2 and 3 of President Trump’s March 31 order. The provisions sought to create a national list of eligible voters and restrict Postal Service delivery of mail ballots. The Trump administration is expected to appeal.

U.S. ” The order directed the Department of Homeland Security and the Postal Service to compile state-by-state lists of U.S. citizens eligible to vote and required the Postal Service to deliver mail ballots only to individuals on those lists.
The injunction prevents enforcement of those provisions through the November midterms. ” Postmaster General David Steiner said on June 24 that the Postal Service would withhold mail ballots from states that decline to turn over absentee voter records. Twenty-four Democrat-led states and local governments filed the lawsuit challenging the order.
In a separate proceeding, U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols declined to block the order in late May. Democrats have appealed that decision to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
The Trump administration is expected to appeal the June 25 ruling.
