Federal Operation in Chicago Leads to 305 Arrests and Recovery of 24 Children

Federal agencies completed a 60-day operation across the Chicago area that resulted in 305 arrests and the recovery of 24 children reported missing or kidnapped. The effort, which began May 1, also produced 140 new federal criminal cases involving 179 defendants. Charges included robbery, kidnapping, drug trafficking, child exploitation, gun trafficking and immigration violations.

Eleven federal agencies participated under a single banner rather than individual agency insignia. The agencies included the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Homeland Security Investigations.

Officials described the approach as a coordinated response to violent crime and drug trafficking. They said the joint effort allowed investigators to target individuals and networks operating in the region.

Patel said the operation reflected a whole-of-government effort under President Trump to address violent crime and crimes against children. U.S. Attorney Andrew S. Boutros stated that federal law enforcement must move at the speed of violence and that the results demonstrated the value of unified action.

A Homeland Security Investigations official said the collaboration removed violent offenders from Chicago streets. A Drug Enforcement Administration official said the seizures highlighted links between violence and drug trafficking.

Among those arrested were two alleged members of the Traveling Vice Lords gang charged with conspiracy to distribute heroin and fentanyl. Another individual arrested was identified as a convicted murderer and illegal immigrant. The agencies reported that 24 children were located and returned to their families during the operation.
