BOSTON — A federal grand jury returned additional charges against Massachusetts state Rep. Christopher J. Worrell on May 8, 2026, expanding an existing bribery and corruption case in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

The superseding indictment names Worrell as the sole defendant and alleges he participated in a scheme to solicit and accept bribes in exchange for official acts. Prosecutors charged him with one count of conspiracy to commit honest-services wire fraud, two counts of honest-services wire fraud, and one count of bribery.

The original indictment, returned in 2025, contained a single count of bribery.

The new charges cover conduct that allegedly occurred between 2022 and 2024 while Worrell held office in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. The superseding indictment states that Worrell accepted cash payments and other things of value from individuals seeking favorable action on state legislation and regulatory matters under his influence.

The total value of the alleged bribes exceeds $25,000.

The case forms part of the Justice Department’s ongoing public-corruption initiative targeting state and local officials. Conviction on the conspiracy and honest-services wire-fraud counts carries a statutory maximum of 20 years in prison per count; the bribery count carries a maximum of 10 years. Sentencing would also include potential forfeiture of any proceeds tied to the scheme.

The addition of the superseding indictment shifts the case from a single-count prosecution to a multi-count indictment that broadens both the factual allegations and the potential penalties. Arraignment on the new charges is scheduled for later this month in Boston federal court. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts is prosecuting the case.

This is the second superseding indictment filed in the matter. The original charging document focused on a discrete bribery transaction; the expanded version incorporates additional wire communications and a second alleged bribe recipient. No trial date has been set.

The Department of Justice initiated the investigation in 2024 under its long-running effort to prosecute public officials for corrupt receipt of things of value.
