Federal Reserve Beige Book Notes Both Gains and Shortfalls for U.S. Cities Hosting 2026 World Cup

The Federal Reserve released its Beige Book on Wednesday detailing regional economic conditions across the United States. Cnbc reported that the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, produced uneven effects on local economies even as median admissions prices topped $900. The Boston Fed stated that hotel bookings tied to the tournament started softer than expected.

Hotels later met forecasts after cutting room rates. Bars recorded higher beer sales, and some ran out of stock when Scottish fans arrived. The Boston Fed's region saw more Canadian visitors than the prior summer, yet totals remained well below historical averages in coastal Maine and northern Vermont.

The New York Fed noted that some restaurants and bars recorded strong sales from match-viewing events. Other eateries reported fewer international visitors, including reduced Canadian foot traffic. New York City hotels posted higher occupancy and room rates during the tournament, while some mid-tier attractions experienced softness and one department store saw increased foot traffic without corresponding sales growth.

The San Francisco Fed reported high tourist volumes in cities hosting World Cup matches. In other markets, locals reduced spending on restaurants, hotels, and entertainment. Demand for consumer and business services slowed somewhat on net, the San Francisco Fed said.

Across regions, the Federal Reserve observed that rising oil prices constrained consumer spending growth. Several districts noted shoppers seeking cheaper alternatives or cutting discretionary purchases to save money. The Canadian government separately reported fewer citizens crossing into the United States after President Donald Trump's tariff policy rollout and sovereignty threats.
