Ferrari Unveils First Electric Vehicle, the Luce
Ferrari introduced its first all-electric model, the Luce, this week. The vehicle drew widespread criticism for its exterior design. Ferrari shares fell after the unveiling before recovering.
Ferrari unveiled its first all-electric vehicle, the Luce, this week. The model features four motors, 1,035 horsepower, and approximately 500 km of range. It is the longest car Ferrari has produced and its first five-seater. The exterior drew immediate criticism online.
Observers compared the design to a vacuum cleaner, a Magic Mouse, and a Nissan Leaf. Derek Jenkins, SVP of Design and Brand at Lucid, said the proportions, visual agility, and expression of performance were missing from the exterior.
The Luce was designed in partnership with LoveFrom, the firm founded by Jony Ive and Marc Newson. It replaces the traditional grille with an S-duct and places a low, glassy cabin inside an aluminum shell. Raphael Zammit, chair of transportation design at the College for Creative Studies, said the design language appeared more suited to a small city car than a supercar.
The interior received more favorable comments for mixing analog and digital elements. Ferrari declined to comment on statements from former company chairman Luca di Montezemolo, who said the car risked destroying a myth.
3 percent in New York the day after the unveiling. The stock later returned to pre-launch levels. CEO Benedetto Vigna said interest remained strong, particularly among new customers. Stephanie Brinley, automotive analyst at S&P Global Mobility, said the reaction occurred during a period of visible wealth inequality.
Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann stated his company would focus on plug-in hybrids rather than full EVs.
