Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman said on Sunday that President Trump should stop revisiting the 2020 presidential election and instead focus on resolving the U.S. war in Iran. He added, “You’re the president.” Fetterman described the focus on the election as “deeply unhelpful” because it distracts from current priorities.
The comments followed a televised primetime address by Trump three days earlier that asserted Chinese meddling in the 2020 race he lost to Joe Biden. A 2021 U.S. Intelligence community assessment found that no foreign actor, including China, attempted to alter any technical aspect of the 2020 voting process.
The assessment determined that Russia conducted influence operations aimed at denigrating Biden’s campaign, while China did not deploy interference efforts intended to change the outcome because it saw neither candidate as advantageous.
Fetterman’s remarks came amid his own recent statements on party alignment. That comment followed a vote by more than 100 U.S. House lawmakers in favor of halting Israeli military aid over incursions into Gaza and Lebanon. Fetterman joined the Senate in 2023 and has positioned himself as a prominent Democratic advocate for Israel.
