Sen. John Fetterman said he has “no plans” to leave the Democratic Party in an opinion piece published May 7, 2026, in The Washington Post. ” He added that he would be a “terrible Republican” who still votes overwhelmingly with Democrats.

” He wrote that “once-common views have become increasingly toxic in the Democratic Party, a result of catering to the fringe and agitated parts of our base.

The senator has supported Israel and said military action against Iran is warranted to prevent the regime from building nuclear weapons. He has also backed the Laken Riley Act, which targets illegal immigrants accused of violent crimes for swift deportation. Fetterman became the first Democratic senator to join President Donald Trump’s Truth Social platform in 2024.

” Fetterman noted he was “not necessarily the popular guy among my Democratic colleagues,” which he called strange given his role in flipping the pivotal Pennsylvania Senate seat for Democrats in the 2022 election.

He told Fox News, “I can’t be a Republican because in many other areas I disagree on that. So whether if I’m politically homeless or whatever, but I’m staying in my party. My voting record actually reflects that I am a Democrat.” Fetterman is not up for reelection until 2028.
