Fidji Simo announced on July 9 that she is stepping down as applications CEO at OpenAI and will transition to a part-time advisor position. Business Insider reported that Simo took medical leave in April to treat postural tachycardia syndrome, or POTS, a condition she was diagnosed with in 2019. She said in an X post that the road to recovery proved longer and more complex than expected.
"During that time, it became clear that the road to recovery would be much longer and more complex than I had anticipated — and that I needed to focus on it fully," Simo wrote. She added that she had previously failed to prioritize her health on multiple occasions. Simo cofounded the Complex Disorders Alliance and the Metrodara Foundation.
Through these organizations scientists conduct research into disorders such as POTS. POTS affects the autonomic nervous system that regulates blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke said symptoms often include dizziness or fainting when standing.
The disorder most commonly affects people between 15 and 50 years old and occurs more frequently in women.
