Film Normal Stars Bob Odenkirk as Interim Sheriff

Normal, a film written by Derek Kolstad, is now streaming on Amazon Prime. The movie stars Bob Odenkirk as Ulysses, an interim sheriff who arrives in the Minnesota town of Normal after the previous sheriff dies. Ulysses initially encounters what appears to be an ordinary community.

He issues lenient parking tickets and mediates minor disputes while recovering from a difficult marriage. The situation changes after a bank robbery reveals a gold-filled vault belonging to the Yakuza. The discovery shows that many residents are involved with the criminal organization.

The film shifts into action-comedy sequences after the robbery. Ulysses is injured multiple times during confrontations with gang members. Kolstad previously wrote the John Wick films. Odenkirk's character differs from those action roles by showing repeated vulnerability rather than invulnerability.

The story draws on Western film traditions in which a law enforcement officer confronts local corruption despite personal reluctance. "I’ve got to, that’s the whole thing," a character states in the 1952 film High Noon, a reference point for Normal's approach to duty.

The movie runs as a dark comedy and includes stylized violence. It concludes with Ulysses addressing the town's criminal activity.
