A review commissioned by Glasgow's child protection committee found that social services and other agencies missed multiple opportunities to intervene in the abuse of three children at a property known as the "beastie house" between 2012 and 2019. The children, all under age 13, were subjected to sexual abuse and violence.

Police described the offences as including rape, attempted murder and assault. Seven adults were convicted in 2023 and later sentenced to prison terms ranging from eight to 20 years.

The review examined records spanning the children's births in the 2000s through the 2023 trial. It identified repeated instances where agencies failed to share information about the children's health, housing and welfare. One child had 12 rotten teeth removed before age five.

The children frequently missed medical appointments, lived in homeless accommodation and begged neighbours for food. A four-month-old was removed from the child protection register in 2007 despite warnings of ongoing risks. The report stated that staff had a poor or partial understanding of the full picture and that information was often not retained or shared between agencies.

It noted that assessments did not fully account for the children's experiences or the adults' capacity to manipulate and deceive.

Anderson, independent chair of Glasgow's child protection committee, said the agencies accepted the report's findings. He stated that a rigorous and ongoing audit of child protection cases had been carried out and that all recommendations would be implemented with oversight and transparency.

The review was supported by Professor Alexis Jay. It concluded that professionals need better support to consider what children in similar situations may be vulnerable to.
