A fire engulfed a pub in northern Bangkok early Monday, killing at least 27 people, Thailand Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said. Rescuers reported the fire around midnight. Footage from first responders showed flames raging from the front door and thick black smoke rising into the sky as people fled.

The prime minister spoke to reporters at the scene and said several injured people had been taken to hospitals. Officials said firefighters brought the blaze under control after about half an hour. Photos from the aftermath showed charred tables and chairs inside the damaged pub.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Anutin Charnvirakul said. Thailand has experienced similar deadly fires at entertainment venues. In 2022 a fire at a music pub in the eastern part of the country killed 14 people.
On January 1, 2009, a fire at the Santika nightclub in Bangkok killed 66 people and injured more than 200 during a New Year’s Eve celebration.
