A fire at Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao pub in Bangkok's Chatuchak district killed at least 27 people and injured 63 others, with 22 in critical condition. The blaze began around midnight on July 12 near the Chatuchak weekend market. Firefighters arrived to find patrons running through flames to escape and brought the fire under control within roughly 30 minutes.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the site. He said a musician performing at the venue saw smoke coming from a circuit breaker near the stage. The power then went out, an explosion followed, and thick smoke rapidly filled the pub.
Many victims were found in the restrooms at the back of the building. An initial assessment indicated an electrical short circuit in an air conditioner in the ceiling caused the fire. Local authorities stated emergency exits may have been obstructed.
The cause remains under investigation. Thailand has recorded similar deadly fires at entertainment venues. A 2022 blaze at a music pub in the eastern part of the country killed 14 people. In 2009, a fire at Bangkok's Santika nightclub on New Year's Day killed 66 people and injured more than 200.
