Fire kills at least five at Antwerp apartment block

A fire broke out on the eighth floor of a 10-storey apartment building in Antwerp's Linkeroever district. At least five people died and several others were injured; more than 200 residents were evacuated. Belgian police said the blaze started in the building where some 200 people live. Thick smoke was seen billowing from the eighth floor.

A man was seen clambering through a window to escape black smoke. Dramatic video showed another man climbing down from a balcony. Officials said the evacuation of more than 200 residents was carried out after the fire was reported.

Police initially reported several people killed and many hurt.

Later statements from officials put the death toll at least five.
