Fire in Mallorca Residential Building Kills Two, Injures Nine

The fire spread to the rest of the building, particularly the upper floors, before being extinguished about two hours later. One of the deceased was identified as a 58-year-old Argentine citizen. The second victim was an unidentified woman.

The two were found in separate apartments. More than 12 people were evacuated from the building. Approximately 20 residents were affected by the fire, local authorities said. Four people remained hospitalized as of the latest statement from those authorities.

The floor where the fire originated and the levels directly above and below it were cordoned off. Nearby hotels will provide temporary housing for displaced residents. The Civil Guard is investigating the cause of the fire.

The agency said a spokesperson spoke on condition of anonymity under department policy. Magaluf is a popular beach and nightlife destination among young British and German tourists. It lies on the coast of Calvià, 22 kilometers west of Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the Mediterranean archipelago.

Local authorities declared two days of mourning following the incident.
