Fire in Mallorca Tourist Area Kills Two, Injures Several

A fire broke out early Thursday at a home in a tourist area on the Spanish island of Mallorca, killing two people and injuring several others, authorities said. The blaze started around 5 a.m. on the third floor of a residential building in the Magaluf area, according to the Civil Guard.

Residents attempted to extinguish the fire but were unsuccessful, and the flames spread to other parts of the building, especially the upper floors. Firefighters brought the blaze under control about two hours later. Four people remained hospitalized, local authorities said in a statement.

About 20 residents were affected by the fire, and nearby hotels will provide temporary housing for those displaced. One of the deceased was a 58-year-old Argentine citizen, and the other was a woman who has not yet been identified, the Civil Guard said. The two victims were in separate apartments.

The floor where the fire started and the levels directly above and below it were cordoned off. Magaluf is a popular beach and nightlife destination located on the coast of Calvià, 22 kilometers west of Palma de Mallorca. Local authorities declared two days of mourning following the incident.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
