A fire on Friday, 19 June 2026, destroyed most of the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach resort in Bayahibe, Dominican Republic, killing one tourist and forcing the evacuation of approximately 1,690 guests. Emergency crews moved the evacuated guests to other hotels and nearby housing facilities. Several additional tourists received medical treatment after the fire.
Local media reported that an Italian tourist died in the fire. The Dominican Republic Emergency Operations Center said the fire spread rapidly because of wind and because part of the resort’s roof was made of thatch. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, the center said.
The Dominicus Palace resort, operated by the same company, was not damaged and continued normal operations.
