Firmware code points to battery-powered Starlink Mini
Recent Starlink firmware contains strings indicating an integrated battery option for the smallest dish. The update would allow untethered operation without external power sources.
theverge.comCode in a May firmware release for Starlink contains references to battery statistics and multiple power states. The strings suggest SpaceX is preparing a version of its smallest internet dish with an internal battery. University researcher Jinwei Zhao identified the code strings, which include a message labeled DishBatteryStats.
The code references fields for state_of_charge and charging status, data that would not be readable if the dish relied solely on an external battery.
Power states and design implications The firmware also references three distinct power modes: USB-C input, internal battery, and simultaneous use of both. Pass-through charging support is included, which would allow the battery to maintain health during extended use.
Current Starlink Mini units require connection to an AC outlet or external battery pack to communicate with satellites in low Earth orbit. Third-party battery solutions exist but require separate software and add bulk. An integrated battery would be managed through the existing Starlink app and covered under SpaceX warranty.
The design would likely accommodate an airline-compliant 99Wh cell, supporting more than five hours of runtime based on prior testing of similar hardware.
