The first saury of the season sold for a record ¥700,000 ($4,300) per kilogram at Tokyo's Toyosu wholesale market on Friday morning. The previous record stood at ¥500,000 per kilogram, set two years earlier. The batch, totaling about 30 kg, was landed at Kushiro Port in Hokkaido on Thursday and reached the market the following day.
The largest fish, each weighing nearly 170 grams, sold for as much as ¥120,000 apiece. “They are big and fresh,” said Yasuhiro Yamazaki, president of intermediate wholesaler Yamaharu. ” Six saury that reached the top price were purchased by Valor, a supermarket chain based in Gifu Prefecture, from Yamaharu.
Valor plans to sell those fish at a special price of ¥10,000 each at one of its stores in Yokohama.
