Five Dead, One Injured in Mining Collapse in Yunnan Province

A collapse at an illegal mining operation in southwest China killed five people and injured one other on Sunday morning, according to Chinese official news agency Xinhua. m. in Baiwu village in Huize County, Yunnan province.

Xinhua did not specify what kind of mine was involved. Rescuers pulled out all six people trapped at the site and sent them to the hospital. Five of the six later died from their injuries. The survivor remained in stable condition, the report said.

Authorities were investigating the cause of the collapse. Just more than a week earlier, a coal mine explosion in China’s northern Shanxi province killed at least 82 people. Local officials said there were “serious violations” of the law by that mine’s operator.
