Five Eyes Statement Addresses AI Models and Cybersecurity

The Five Eyes intelligence alliance warned Monday that the most advanced artificial intelligence models are improving quickly enough to outsmart prevailing cybersecurity defenses within months, CBS News reported. The security agencies of Britain, the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand issued a joint statement urging governments and businesses to act swiftly.

The statement said the rapid pace of frontier AI development means cyber risk assumptions can become outdated in months, not years.

It added that AI lowers barriers for malicious actors and increases the speed and complexity of attacks. The advisory recommended that organizations integrate AI tools into security operations, update old systems and limit access to critical systems.

It stated that breaches will occur and that preparedness helps contain them quickly to prevent escalation into major operational and financial crises.

Anthropic this month suspended access to its Mythos 5 model and a restricted version called Fable 5. The company said it received a U.S. government directive banning all foreign nationals from accessing the models just days after Fable 5 was publicly launched.

Chris Krebs, former director of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, told CBS News the Five Eyes statement is pretty alarming. He said the past several months have been a bit of a whirlwind in terms of advanced AI and that the advisory lays out discrete and achievable actions for organizations to become harder targets and more resilient.
